Glow World Spikey Balloon - B of the Bang LookalikeI think some one is havin a larf, couldn't believe my eyes as I was walking past the City of Manchester Stadium at Sportcity. I had to look twice and try to remember what day it was, i thought it was April Fool's Day or some practical joke. On that same spot we used to have what was the tallest sculture in the UK, it was called the B of the Bang, now we have a plastic lookalike. The B of the Bang was the subject of much discussion, local opinion was divided between like it, hate it, some were indifferent, but many were glad to see it gone for good.

The structure which cost £1.4m was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and was constructed in Sheffield, the heaviest part of the structure arrived first at Sportcity and was erected in 2004 with the spikes added after.

Problems started to set in very early on, even before the offical unveiling a bit fell off, and then the problems seemed to snowball from then on. A few months later another bit come loose, it was then fenced off just in case more bits decided to loosen or fall off and injured a member of the public. After further work to make it safe, the fencing around it was not removed, in 2006 spikes were removed for further testing. Manchester City Council decided to take legal action in 2007, a year later an out of court settlement was reached and MCC received £1.7M in damages.

Similarities are amazing, although I personally like the blow up balloon for the following reasons.

  • It did not cost £1.4million
  • It does not look rusty
  • Bits will not fall off and kill you
  • It lights up at night

ARTICLE UPDATE:-

The day after I took the photos of the Glow World air sculture we had a bad storm, heavy rain and high winds wiped it out, now that sounds familiar doesn't it. But all is not lost because it was easily replaced, and it was up and running very quickly, now why couldn't the other one do that. And do you know what, they replaced it with an even better version, multicouloured and more spikes, and as a bonus there is a smaller one near by.
